Clinical Research

The dramatic advances which have occurred in the management of many types of liver diseases have been the result of clinical trials testing new drugs and diagnostic techniques.

The Division of Hepatology is involved in a variety of areas within liver disease helping to develop these new drugs and therapies. This includes new drugs to treat many of the most common liver diseases occurring in adults including chronic hepatitis B and C as well as novel drugs to treat other types of liver disease including biliary cirrhosis. Advances in treating hepatitis C have been particularly dramatic with cure possible for an increasing number of patients without the need for interferon injections and with generally few side effects. Patients seen in our practice may have the opportunity to volunteer to participate in a clinical trial if a new treatment is being tested for their liver disorder.
