Patient Care

A novel approach to clinical care….

The Division of Hospital Medicine provides clinical services to University of Miami Hospital and Clinics, Jackson Memorial Hospital, the University Preoperative Assessment Center, and Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.

University of Miami Hospital and Clinics is the flagship practice of the Division of Hospital Medicine. The Division provides coverage to two academic teaching teams with internal medicine residents and medical students. The Division also provides two faculty direct non-teaching services specializing in Comanagement of cardiology/ cardiothoracic surgery patients and complex Hematology/ Oncology patients. Each of these teams is staffed by a faculty hospitalist and a nurse practitioner. Lastly, the Division provides an internal medicine consult service to the surgeons and psychiatrists who care for patients at the University of Miami Hospital and Clinics. Lastly, the nocturnist service (hospitalists who only work night shifts) ensures that there is a 24/7/365 presence of faculty hospitalists at the University of Miami Hospital and Clinics to provide seamless care. The Division if proud of its safety, quality, educational, and patient satisfaction record at the University of Miami Hospital and Clinics. The Division has provided Palliative Care and Hospice Services for the last 4 years to meet the needs of those patients at the end of life.

At Jackson Memorial Hospital, the Division contributes to the educational and clinical mission by providing an Internal Medicine Consult Service and a novel Bedside Procedure Service. The Consult Service is a teaching service that provides 24/7/365 consults to surgical, obstetric, neurologic and rehabilitation patients with medical diagnoses. The bedside procedure service is a novel. It is the most popular rotation in the Internal Medicine Residency. Under direct faculty supervision, Internal Medicine residents learn how to safely perform thoracentesis, paracentesis, lumbar puncture, central venous catheter and dialysis catheter placement. This is one of the few institutions in the nation that does this.

The University of Miami Preoperative Assessment Center, UPAC, is another novel practice. A collaboration between the Department of Anesthesia and the Division of Hospital Medicine, patients seen received a combined Internal Medicine and Anesthesia preoperative risk assessment and medical optimization of their chronic diseases prior to surgery at either University of Miami Hospital and Clinics or Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. UPAC is one of few such centers of its kind in the United States.

At the Bascom Palmer Preoperative Assessment Clinic, the Division of Hospital Medicine contributes to the clinical mission of the nation’s foremost eye hospital. This practice is another preoperative assessment clinic for ambulatory surgeries. Hospitalists oversee a preoperative clinic staffed by nurse practitioners and physician assistants for low to moderate risk ambulatory ophthalmologic, ENT, and orthopedic surgeries and perform urgent consults on medical patients.
