Hospital Medicine

Providing dedicated and high quality care

A Message from The Chief

Hospitalists are physicians dedicated to the care of hospitalized patients. They function as your primary care physician would when you are admitted to the hospital- coordinating care with specialists, preparing and coordinating your safe discharge, and making sure you receive the highest quality care with superior outcomes. The Division was created in 2007 as one of the first academic Divisions in the nation.

Our promise to provide dedicated and high quality patient care, the core of our clinical mission. For the patients who entrust their lives to us to the physicians who refer to us, the Division has an outstanding track record for providing the high quality patient care with superior outcomes. We care for patients at the University of Miami Hospital, Jackson Memorial Hospital, Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, and the University Preoperative Assessment Center. Our faculty is as diverse as South Florida, and we speak multiple languages in order to personally relate to our patients! Our office and administrative staff provide exceptional service as well.

Preparing clinicians of tomorrow, our educational mission. The Faculty of the Division are leaders in Hospital Medicine education locally and nationally. Our faculty are routinely sought as faculty speakers and course directors for continuing medical education conferences nationally and internationally. Twice our faculty have been selected as the Course Director of the Society of Hospital Medicine Annual Meeting, the prestigious flagship meeting for over 35,000 hospitalists worldwide. Our faculty are key leaders in the Internal Medicine Residency program here at Jackson Memorial Hospital as two serve as Associate Program Directors; another serves as a clerkship director for the medical student rotations at University of Miami Hospital. We have implemented novel curricula to teach the core competencies of hospital medicine including an award-winning curriculum for the safe performance of bedside procedures as well as Patient Safety and Quality Improvement in healthcare. We are award-winning medical educators as recognized by the Internal Medicine and the Combined Internal Medicine-Pediatrics Residency.

Pushing the envelope, in clinical research. Nationally, we are renowned leaders publishing in the areas of quality improvement and patient safety, medical education, and perioperative medicine. Our two flagship research projects revolve around the safe use of blood thinners and the safe performance of bedside procedures- one of these is funded federally by the National Institutes of Health and the second by a Florida statewide foundation.

Our final mission is service and leadership. Nationally, we have served on editorial boards and as reviewers of multiple journals. We serve on multiple committees and leadership roles of the Society of Hospital Medicine and Society of General Internal Medicine. We advocate for our patients as members of the senior leadership of both Jackson Memorial Hospital and University of Miami Hospital. As citizens of the hospitals we serve, Division faculty are chairpersons of many of the most important committees at the University of Miami and Jackson Memorial Hospitals.

There is something special about the Division of Hospital Medicine at the University of Miami….

Warmest Regards,
