Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine

Specialized care for older adults

A Message from The Chief

Welcome to the Division of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine in the Department of Medicine at the University of Miami (UM) Miller School of Medicine.

Geriatricians provide specialized care that focuses on prevention and management of the complex medical, psychological, and social problems that older adults experience in order to maintain and promote the independence and well-being of the elderly individual.

Our four-prong academic mission is to provide excellence in medical education pertaining to the elderly, expand medical knowledge through research on aging and age-related diseases, develop and provide high-quality geriatric and palliative care to those who need it, and be a community partner to enhance the health and quality of life for south Florida older adults.

To fulfill this mission, our division has more than 20 faculty members including clinicians, educators, and both basic and clinical researchers.

Sincerely,

Olveen Carrasquillo, MD MPH
Professor of Medicine and Public Health Sciences
Chief, Division of General Internal Medicine
Interim Chief, Geriatrics and Palliative Care
